Weather Summary

Shaun Tanner

Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, June 23, 2008.

Severe weather with damaging winds and large hail continued across the eastern half of th US on Monday. A trough of low pressure over the Northeast created a cold front that extended down the Ohio Valley and into the Central Plains. The cold front triggered multiple storms which included frequent thunder and lightning, heavy downpours, and gusty winds. It was reported that the ground was covered with hail in Knox county, Ohio, and several trees and wires were blown down and damaged a home in Beekman, New York. Flooding has been of concern in these regions as a result of these slow moving storms.

The Southeast saw some severe weather as a cold front moved through and triggered showers and thunderstorms in the Carolinas. Hail up to 3/4 of an inch was reported in Spartanburg, South Carolina and strong winds blew down a large tree, causing it to block a road in Marlboro county, South Carolina. Meanwhile in Florida and the Gulf states, afternoon showers and thunderstorms have popped up. Damaging winds have been reported in Inglis, Florida.

In the Northern Plains, severe weather developed from a small trough of low pressure that moved into the region on Wednesday. Hail was reported in Custer, South Dakota.

The Southern Plains saw calm conditions on Monday with patchy clouds and warm weather.

The Pacific Northwest saw showers on Monday as a low pressure system off the West Coast brought scattered clouds into the region. Temperatures remained seasonable with highs in the 60s along the coast and reached into the 70s inland.

The Southwest remained hot and dry with sunny conditions on Monday. Temperatures were in the 90s and some desert areas approached 110 degrees.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at Meacham, Ore to a midday high of 109 degrees at Blythe, Calif.

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog:
Typhoon Fengshen one of the deadliest ever for the Philippines

The year 2008 continues to be a year of the natural disaster, as the death toll from Typhoon Fengshen in the Philippines appears likely to exceed 900. At least 163 died when the Category 2 typhoon made landfall over the northern Philippines Saturday, and 807 people are missing from the ferry MV Princess of Stars, which sank during the typhoon. Only 38 survivors of the 845 people who were on the ship have been found. According to typhoon2000.com, Typhoon Fengshen will...

Weather History:
Did you know that...

Sir Francis Drake met the Roanoke Island Hurricane on this date in 1586 off the Atlantic Coast. During three days of thunderstorms, settlers complained of hail as big as hen's eggs and great spouts at sea. These harsh weather events caused Drake to evacuate the settlers back to England.
